How much does website accessibility remediation cost?
The cost of fixing a store depends on how many templates need work, how heavily the theme is customised, how many apps are installed and how many product images need descriptions. Total page count matters less than you might think.
What drives the price
| Factor | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Templates | Store pages come from a few templates. Fix home, collection, product and cart once and thousands of pages follow. |
| Theme customisation | Official themes start from a better base; heavy custom code or third-party themes need more review. |
| Third-party apps | Reviews, pop-ups, subscriptions and chat widgets inject code. Each needs testing, and some need replacing. |
| Product images | Every product image needs a description. Dozens can be written by hand; thousands need bulk drafting and spot checks. |
| Languages | Each language version needs its own descriptions and labels. |
Options compared
| Approach | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Your own developers follow a checklist | Teams with front-end developers and few issues | Someone must know keyboard and screen reader testing to verify the fixes |
| A remediation provider | Stores without developers or with many issues | Make sure they change code and hand over test records |
| An overlay | Not recommended as a compliance plan | Does not prevent lawsuits; see overlays |
A11yPass pricing
| Service | Price | Includes |
|---|---|---|
| Online test | Free | Home, product and collection pages plus keyboard and phone tests |
| Manual review | Free | Keyboard and screen reader walk from home page to checkout, written report within 24 hours |
| Fix plan | from $450 | Item-by-item code changes for five templates, one retest after your developers finish |
| Done-for-you fixes | from $1,200 | We make the changes, including alt text for up to 300 product images, an accessibility statement and a remediation log |
| Monthly monitoring | from $120/mo | Monthly rescans, fixes and peer lawsuit alerts; 15% off paid yearly |
Starting prices are for a standard Shopify theme. Heavily customised themes, many apps or more than 300 product images are quoted after the manual review.
How to keep the cost down
- Fix templates before individual pages
- Draft product image descriptions in bulk and spot-check them
- If a theme change is planned, switch first and fix once
- Test new pages before launch instead of fixing after a complaint
Questions
Why price by template rather than by page?
Product and collection pages are generated from templates, so fixing a template fixes every page that uses it. Page count mainly affects the image description work.
Can the checkout be fixed?
Shopify maintains its checkout, and merchants can only change checkout extensions. We test the checkout flow and fix any custom parts.
Will the fixes change how the store looks?
Most fixes are invisible, such as button names, alt text and form labels. Color contrast is the main visible change, and we show you the palette first.
